The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is out with a breaking video, obtained by a documentary filmmaker in January 2011, which shows Scott Walker’s “bomb” was just the beginning of his “Right-to-Work-For-Less” agenda.

In the damning video, Walker talks about his plan to employ a secret “divide and conquer” strategy against unions, despite publicly stating that he would not push so-called “right-to-work” legislation.

Even more damaging for what remains of Scott Walker’s credibility with Wisconsinites, his confession came in response to a request from Diane Hendricks, a billionaire Koch Brothers strategist with a long history of supporting “right-to-work-for-less” legislation and financing ultra-conservative Wisconsin Republicans, who is Walker’s top campaign donor with $510,000 in contributions.

Scott Walker tells his corporate benefactor, “The first step is we’re going to deal with collective bargaining for all public employee unions, because you use divide and conquer.”

The bargaining bill, Walker said, would “open the door” for “Right-to-Work-For-Less” legislation.

This video exchange, like Scott Walker’s call with whom he believed to be David Koch, highlights Scott Walker’s propensity for saying one thing in public and doing another in private. Walker’s call with the phony Koch brother revealed that after he dropped “the bomb” on Wisconsin with his elimination of collective bargaining for public employees, he even considered inciting acts of violence in a peaceful crowd, all to divide the people and advance his special interest agenda.

Despite pursuing “Right-to-Work-For-Less” legislation while serving in the state legislature, and his history of opposing prevailing wage laws, Walker has repeatedly denied in public his present intent to turn Wisconsin into a low-wage, low-benefit state.

Speaking to Wisconsin Public Radio in April 2012, Walker said, “I have no interest in a Right to Work law in the state. We’re not going to pursue that in the remainder of our term and we’re not going to pursue it in the future.” [“Walker denies wanting to make Wisconsin a right to work state,” Wisconsin Public Radio, April 26, 2012]

As reported in February 2012, by The Atlantic, “In our case, we’ve opted to address [unions] on the public sector level,” Walker said. “You look at private sector unions by and large have been our partner in economic development. They haven’t been an obstacle to that. So that’s not anything we’re pursuing.” I asked if that meant he would oppose a right-to-work law for Wisconsin. “Not oppose it, it’s just not something we’re pursuing right now,” he said. “When I was in the legislature, I supported it. It’s not something I’m pursuing right now, nor have any plan of pursuing. Again, private-sector unions have been our partner in the economic revival we’ve had in this state. A bigger issue is the impact the public-sector unions have had on the taxpayers. And that’s essentially what we have in Wisconsin — right-to-work in the public sector.” [“Wisconsin, One Year Later,” The Atlantic, February 24, 2012]

As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in January 2012, “Cullen Werwie, Walker’s spokesman, said the governor would not be introducing any right-to-work legislation in Wisconsin.” [“Walker won’t push right-to-work legislation,” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, January 25, 2012]

As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in March 2011, “The bill does not apply to unions in the private sector. Walker called those unions partners in improving the state’s economy and indicated he was not seeking “right-to-work” legislation that would let private-sector employees opt not to join unions and pay dues. Asked Friday if that meant he would veto such legislation, he said no, without elaborating.” [“Walker signs budget bill, legal challenges mount - Democrats immediately file suit to halt changes,” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, March 11, 2011]

As reported by the Sawyer County Record in February 2011, “Gov. Walker was asked specifically about charges by some labor leaders that he wants to turn Wisconsin into a right to work state, where no one could be required to join a union as a condition of employment. When asked by a reporter if the ultimate goal is to turn Wisconsin into a right to work state, Walker said it wasn’t.” [“Wausau labor leaders believe governor is targeting all labor unions,” Sawyer County Record, February 18, 2011]

Now that the primary has passed and candidates have been chosen by voters to be the Party nominees, the Sheboygan County Democratic Party stands strongly behind Tom Barrett and Mahlon Mitchell, who will replace Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch on June 5th.

The following is a statement from Sheboygan County Chair Andrew M. Bubb about the upcoming general election.

“We’ve all witnessed Scott Walker’s destruction firsthand. We’ve all seen how he’ll say one thing, then do another. We’ve all heard the promises that have become lies. We’ve all been affected by his harmful, extremist agenda that hurts Wisconsin’s working families and rolls back our rights. And soon, we all will replace him.

“The voters have chosen Tom Barrett and Mahlon Mitchell to lead us to victory on June 5th against Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch. Tom Barrett has the experience and knowledge to pull us out of the hole Scott Walker has dug us into. Tom Barrett also has something Scott Walker lacks: an ability to listen to the voters who elected him. That, combined with an interest in doing what is right for all of Wisconsin’s residents — not just a select few of the rich, special interests as Walker has — is what makes him the best candidate to take on and beat Scott Walker.

“Mahlon Mitchell is a fresh face to politics and that’s what we need now. He will work across every corner of the state to heal the harm Walker, Kleefisch and their radical, right-wing agenda has caused. Mahlon Mitchell will also new ideas and new ways of thinking that will take us to a position needed for Wisconsin’s future growth.

“Together, Tom Barrett and Mahlon Mitchell will lead us to victory on June 5th against Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch, so we can return to the values of compassion, care and understanding for Wisconsin’s middle-class, working families.”

ICYMI: Scott Walker Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Shame Front Page - “State job losses worst in U.S.”

MADISON - The right-leaning Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which has endorsed Scott Walker throughout his career and opposed his recall, had an above-the-fold front page headline highlighting a shocking new report that showed that, under Walker, Wisconsin led the nation in job loss.

Look at the headline here.

According to the new report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Wisconsin was far-and-away the leader in the nation in jobs loss, losing some 24,000 jobs in a period where the rest of the nation has been ADDING jobs.

“For all Scott Walker’s dog-and-pony shows on jobs, the fact is that Wisconsin leads the nation in job loss under Walker’s failed leadership. He claimed that jobs were his signature issue and, by that standard, he has failed spectacularly, salting the earth for Wisconsin’s middle class in his inept and criminally corrupt administration,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Wednesday. “Scott Walker’s self-regard is legendary, but even he must understand the shame in making headlines in his Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for leading the nation in job loss.”

The Sheboygan Press has found that Walker’s claims that the City of Sheboygan “saved” $1.3 million were badly inflated, and $880,000 off the mark.

“It’s not just that Scott Walker raised property taxes and then claimed he lowered them, blew a hole in the structural deficit and then claimed falsely that he fixed it, caused record job loss and then denied it, and claimed “savings” that are just a euphemism for the biggest cuts to safety and education in state history,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate on Tuesday. “Now, we see that he also is distorting and manipulating even those “savings” numbers in a shameful attempt to deceive the public as he faces a recall election. We are just finding out about inflated numbers in Sheboygan, but it stands to reason that the same “math” was used statewide. Scott Walker cannot be trusted to tell even the simplest truths.”

Read about the inflated numbers here.

By: Adam Farrell-Wortman

Scott Walker has launched a multi-million dollar ad campaign in the hopes that he can convince parents and teachers that his $2.6 billion cuts to public education - the largest in Wisconsin history - are leading to successes. But parents can see the growing class sizes, the shrinking staff and the deteriorating schools. The teachers who are lucky enough not to get pink slips this year know full well that they and their colleagues will face additional layoffs next year. Teachers also know that they will pay more for fewer benefits, while their workloads and class sizes are increased. No matter how much money Scott Walker spends on commercials, local school districts know that they will feel the pain of Walker’s assault on public education for years to come.

While Scott Walker makes his absurd claims that he is saving teaching jobs and getting more money into the classroom, teachers will be getting layoff notices and school districts will see their per pupil funds reduced by 5.5%. According to the Lakeland Times, for places like Lakeland Union High School that translates into $728.24 less per student. LUHS officials also reported that even though they’ve cut salaries and reduced benefits their expenditures are still rising, while their budget is shrinking.

The Janesville Gazette reports that the Janesville School District is considering a plan to layoff five full-time teachers. This will increase classroom sizes in high school and create larger special education case loads. However, they are facing an $8-10 million budget deficit, so these cuts are just the tip of the iceberg.

In Menomonee Falls, preliminary layoff notices are being mailed out to 60 teachers, with the expectation that between seven and ten positions will be eliminated. After weeks, if not months, of uncertainty as the district’s budget is finalized and cuts are made, those that ultimately get to keep their job this year will see their benefits reduced, while the out-of-paycheck contribution is raised. According to Superintendent Patricia Greco, teachers can look forward to more layoffs next year and further budget cuts.

The above examples reflect the poor state of affairs in Wisconsin. Scott Walker’s $2.6 billion destruction of public education does not simply translate into fewer teachers, fewer support staff and larger class sizes. It also means our schools will not have the tools to educate and prepare students for a 21st century economy. It means schools won’t have money for building repair, let alone the needed retrofitting to accommodate new technology or the ability to buy new technology. It means our state will be less attractive to job creators looking to relocate to Wisconsin. The actual, real world effects of Walker’s budget are just getting started and if left unchecked Wisconsin’s public education system will be left in ruins.

Scott Walker can keep spending his sleazy corporate millions on misleading commercials, but parents know the truth, teachers know the truth and no advertisement is going to convince them that Scott Walker’s annihilation of Wisconsin’s public education system is working.
